Check in with Tiny, a cat who’s “lightening” up

In February, CatTime.com reported on Tiny, a cat who was left at a Canadian animal shelter inside a sealed cardboard box. The feline weighed 30 pounds, and immediately after he arrived at the shelter, Tiny was placed on a supervised diet.

On October 16, for Tiny’s weekly weigh-in, the feline clocked in at 18 pounds — by the numbers, the cat has lost 12 pounds in seven months.

“It’s Tiny’s Tuesday and time for my weigh-in!” a post on Tiny’s Weight Loss Challenge Facebook page claimed on October 16. “I did have a bit of a struggle the last couple of weeks but this happens. Last week I weighed 18 lbs. 8.5 oz. and today I weigh 18 lbs. 6 oz.”

Tiny illustrates the problem of pet obesity and the feline is one in a long line of cats who suffer from the condition. Meow is another high-profile overweight cat who immediately comes to mind; unfortunately, he died of pulmonary failure in May. Meow’s tragic story highlighted the pitfalls of obese pets, as he weighed 39 pounds.

A healthy cat should weigh 7 to 12 pounds.
