Longest cat in the world dies

A feline who holds the Guinness Record for being the World’s Longest Domestic Cat died on Monday, Feb. 4, at his home in Reno. He was 8 years old.

Mymains Stewart Gilligan“Stewie” for short – measured 48.5 inches (more than four feet) from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail on August 28, 2010. The Maine Coon cat also had longest tail on a domestic feline.

Maine Coons are one of the largest of the domestic cats, and typically weigh 9 to 18 pounds.

Leo, the prior record holder, was also a Maine Coon; he measured 48 inches.

Stewie was diagnosed with cancer in January 2012. After treatment, the cat appeared to make a full recovery and was free of the disease. The relief was short-lived, however, as cancer struck at the feline’s kidneys.
