Being second favorite might not sound so bad unless you’re competing for the affection of a cat. Unlike people, felines rarely feel the need to hide their preferences, and they can be quite consistent about who earns their attention. For the humans lower on the list, that can make for some hostile interactions. A recent video chronicling a cat named Waffles’ five-day stay with his “spare human” offered a hilarious example of that reality.
Mom updates fans after leaving cat alone with spare human for 5 days
When Waffles’ mom had to spend several days away from home, she left the orange tabby in the care of her partner. To keep followers updated, she later shared a collection of clips on @thegoldenbreakfastclub showing how Waffles handled the temporary change. While he was never truly alone, the cat made it clear that being left with his second-choice human was far from ideal.
One of the first updates shows the “spare human” attempting to work at his computer while Waffles acts as an uninvited assistant. The cat repeatedly swats at his hand, seemingly demanding that all attention be redirected to more important matters, namely, himself.
The video then reveals a softer side to the relationship. Waffles eventually settles into his dad’s lap, where he receives pets and scratches. Even so, the cat appears determined to maintain a certain emotional distance. In another clip, the “spare human” tries speaking to him, only to receive a complete lack of interest in return. Waffles stares elsewhere, giving the impression that the conversation simply does not concern him.
The challenges continue during playtime. Hoping to get a reaction, his dad waves a toy snake in front of the cat. Waffles barely acknowledges the effort. Nearby, however, the family’s Golden Retriever Maple eagerly embraces the fun, happily playing with a plush toy.
Later, Waffles finally joined Maple for a bit of fun, with the two pets getting into playful mischief together. His patience for the spare human remains limited, though. At one point, another attempt at petting earns a swift swat of the paw.
The mood changes instantly once Waffles’ favorite person returns home. The final moments show him greeting his mom before curling up beside her for a nap. According to the video, this spot next to her is his favorite place to be. In the caption, his mom summed up the experience with a joke, writing that “Waffles survived, but he wasn’t happy about it!”
