This Cat’s Eyes Have Undergone a Stunning Transformation

When @badgalrory shared a video of their Bengal cat, Rory, she asked, “Someone explain how eyes can change this much,” referring to the stunning transformation of Rory’s eyes.

The clip follows Rory from a tiny kitten to a majestic four-year-old cat, and the transition is nothing short of breathtaking. In those early weeks, the cat’s eyes were pale green-gray with a hazel hue. However, fast-forward to today, and they have become pools of vibrant aqua-blue, a color so intense that it got everyone thinking they were AI-generated.

Cat’s eyes have changed strikingly since kitten days

The on-screen text teases, “Cat’s eyes are best as kittens,” but the video argues otherwise, and naturally, the transformation shocked viewers. As they collectively gasped in the comment section, raving about the cat, one commented, “She has such bright beautiful eyes,” while another declared, “They look like gems,” and a third one said, “She has the ocean in her eyes.”

One person pointed out, “Even human babies’ eyes change. I think so babies are born with blue eyes. Kittens too. Her eyes are stunning.” Another fan explained, “They change color because when they are really young, under 2 months or so, their eyes have very little pigment so they appear blue and as they get older the pigment starts coming in so it changes to their adult color.”

And that is exactly what is going on. Kittens open their eyes to a world of soft blue because the pigment-producing cells, melanocytes, have not fully activated. As they mature, melanin floods the iris, gradually painting the permanent color, usually settling by around three to four months. And in Bengals, the spectrum can be especially dramatic, ranging from emerald green to deep gold, and sometimes, like Rory, a shimmering turquoise that seems unreal.

The richness of this cat’s eyes transformation deepened as she grew, turning the initially muted flecks into a stunning hue.
