Can Cats Eat Dill? Is Dill Safe For Cats?

Can cats eat dill? You might have had this thought while adding some chopped dill to one of your meals. Or maybe you grow your own dill and have found yourself wondering if your cat might also enjoy some. If humans can eat dill, can cats safely eat it too?

There is no short yes or no answer to whether cats can eat dill. Technically, it is not toxic or poisonous to cats. But it doesn’t offer too much in the way of health benefits for your kitty.

As always, you must ask your regular vet before going ahead and sharing any human food with your beloved feline, including dill.

Here’s what you need to know about dill and cats.

When Is Dill Okay For Cats To Eat?

Dill is not a poisonous food for cats. In fact, it contains a number of vitamins and antioxidants that could help improve your cat’s diet. In some cases, dill can also help out with any blood sugar issues your cat might be experiencing.

If you’re considering feeding dill to your cat, make sure to only feed the fronds of the herb, as the tougher stems can become harder to digest. Feel free to chop up and sprinkle some fresh dill fronds directly into your cat’s usual mealtime food.

Cats are obligate carnivores, so most of their diet should consist of meat. Dill might not be poisonous to cats, but the health benefits are not really enough to make it a cornerstone of any kitty’s diet.

Unlike humans, eating a large amount of fruits and vegetables should not become a core part of any cat’s diet.

In the case of dill, there is also the chance that your cat might be allergic to the herb or that it upsets their stomach.

Additionally, avoid feeding dill pickles to your cat, as these usually contain amounts of sugar and salt that are not appropriate for a kitty.

If you decide to feed dill to your cat because it seems that they enjoy the texture and process of snacking on fresh plants, you might want to consider growing some catnip or wheatgrass instead, as both of these plants offer much more in the way of health and dietary benefits for a cat.
