Can Cats Drink Carbonated Water? Is Carbonated Water Safe For Cats?

Can cats drink carbonated water? Maybe you’ve noticed that your cat seems intrigued by the bubbles in a glass of sparkling water and naturally wondered whether they might also like to try a few sips. If humans can drink carbonated water, can cats safely drink it too?

The short answer is yes, cats can drink carbonated water. Cats need water to stay hydrated. So as long as there are no extra ingredients or artificial flavors added to the drink, carbonated water will help your feline consume their required daily amount of water. But you should keep it to small portions as it could cause bloat in some cases.

As always, you must ask your regular vet before sharing any human drinks with your beloved kitty, including carbonated water. Here’s what you need to know about carbonated water and cats.

How Is Carbonated Water Good For Cats?

It’s vital that your cat stays properly hydrated, and water is the best way to achieve that. Unfortunately, some cats often show a reluctance to drink a sufficient amount of water from their bowls. It can help to use water fountains and spouts to tempt them to drink water.

In some cases, the bubbles in carbonated water can become appealing to a cat and might entice them to drink more water.

If you find that your cat seems intrigued by carbonated water, you’ll need to consider a few things before letting them drink it freely.

First up, make sure that there are no extra ingredients added to the carbonated water. Artificial sweeteners, including xylitol, should always be avoided and can have serious consequences for a cat that consumes them. Even natural additions like fruits can cause issues for a cat.

Secondly, check the ingredients of your carbonated water to make sure that there hasn’t been any extra sodium added to it.

Finally, stay cautious when letting your cat enjoy some carbonated water. This is because if a cat drinks too much carbonated water, there is a possibility that it could cause a case of bloat.

So feel free to let your cat take a few sips of carbonated water here and there, but get in the habit of making it a fun treat. Always serve regular water, and ideally water that’s been filtered, as your kitty’s main way of staying properly hydrated.
