The cause of coccidia in cats is a parasite that infects the host. There are actually a number of different parasites that can cause the condition, including the parasites Hepatozoon, Isospora felis, Isospora rivolta, Toxoplasma gondii, and Sarcocystis.

The main way that a cat can become infected is by ingesting the feces of another infected animal.

Additionally, cats can pick up the infection by eating an infecting animal or raw meat. Therefore, cats who hunt for their food have a higher risk.

Veterinary Treatments

If you think that your kitty is suffering from coccidia, then your veterinarian will want to ask about your cat’s recent activities and potential exposure to infected feces or animals. Vets usually use an analysis of the cat’s stool in order to confirm a diagnosis.

Treatment generally involves getting rid of the parasites through the use of medicine. Vets often prescribe the drug sulfadimethoxine for cats suffering from this condition.

As always, if your vet prescribes your cat any medicine, then it is vital that you stick to the precise dosage and frequency instructions and complete the full course of medication.

In general, you can help protect your cat from contracting an infection by keeping them indoors and away from other potentially infected animals.
