Video: Cat Smartly Improvises After Mom Throws Away Cardboard Boxes

For reasons known best to them, cats seem to have an unshakable fondness for cardboard boxes. It doesn’t matter how many toys you buy or how cozy the pet bed is, if there is a box lying around, your feline will probably claim it. So when one owner tossed her cat’s boxes out, he had no choice but to find a new favorite spot, and what he picked has gone viral in an Instagram video.

Cat uses a bag to rest after owner throws away cardboard boxes in viral video

Instagram user @loki.doestricks shared the hilarious moment her cat, Loki, had to make do after she threw away his favorite cardboard boxes. The video shows Loki curled up inside a shopping bag with a deadpan look on his face, perfectly still and slightly unimpressed. The onscreen text reads, “when mom throws away all the cardboard boxes and you’re forced to improvise,” capturing the moment with spot-on humor. Loki’s expression says it all — he is not happy, but he’s settling in anyway.

The clip quickly took off online, amassing more than 1.7 million views and 159K likes since its upload. The comments section became a stream of jokes and reactions, with one person saying, “Looks like he’s having an existential crisis,” referring to Loki’s blank stare.

Another commented, “Loki said ‘Mom, you need to order some stuff from Amazon stat! We need to stock up on boxes.’” One especially relatable remark read, “When you’re at a sleepover and they forget to give you a blanket,” accurately summing up Loki’s bag-as-a-bed situation.

According to animal behaviorists, cardboard boxes offer a sense of security and warmth, acting as small, enclosed spaces where cats feel safe. The confined structure can also help reduce stress and anxiety. Moreover, studies have suggested that these makeshift hideouts help cats regulate their body temperature and serve as perfect vantage points for observing their surroundings without drawing attention.
