Video: Street Cat Who Never Learned to Meow Is Now Finding His Voice

It’s genuinely so sweet when a rescue pet finally feels safe enough to show their real personality. Ernie is a perfect example of this over at the South Wales foster account @kbfostertails.

As we learn from the video’s caption, this former street cat didn’t make a single sound for the first month he was with them. Just total silence. But now things have changed in a big way. A new clip shows that this rescue is finally figuring out how to use his voice. And he is definitely making up for lost time with some very interesting sounds.

Street cat learns how to use his voice in adorable video

The video starts with the former street cat sitting politely by an open dining room door. He isn’t begging for food or anything. He’s just exercising his vocal cords. He lets out this incredibly long, loud meow. It is just a very sustained, loud sound. Then immediately afterwards, he tries a super short “aoo” sound that ends right after it starts.

Next is the turn for another long one that sounds almost like a vocal purr. “Ernie didn’t make a peep for the first month, and now he is very much finding his voice,” his foster family wrote in the caption. And it’s just beautiful to watch him express himself fully now.

The video then cuts to show the rescued street cat sitting next to the window near his scratch post. But he isn’t interested in the scratch post or any of his toys. He is just focused on making more noise.

This time, it sounds halfway between talking and clearing his throat. Then we see him behind the TV stand, where he sounds like he is physically straining just to get the meow out. But he does it anyway.

Over 13,700 people liked the post. The comments are full of people cheering him on. One person demanded to know why nobody was saying hello back to him. Another viewer loved the little blinks he does while meowing. He is definitely turning into a “talkative boy” now that he knows he’s safe.
