The internet is melting over a man adopting the “saddest” cat from an Arizona shelter after his pet’s passing. The feline’s transformation from “sad eyes” to a “happy dude” is warming hearts on social media. It seems the endearing adoption ended up healing both the man and the cat.
Man shares heartfelt story of grieving and healing with new shelter cat
Andrew McCarthy, an astrophotographer, took to his X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit to share the news about adopting the “saddest” cat. The posts have gone viral on both platforms, amassing thousands of likes. Earlier this month, McCarthy shared on X that he “went and adopted the cat with the saddest eyes at the shelter.” The photographer explained he “felt a void” since his cat passed away last year. He added, “Hopefully he likes Bailey and astronomy and I can give him happy eyes.”
Later, in the X thread, McCarthy explained his dog is named Bailey and added, “I’m not planning on giving the kitty Baileys liquor.” Following that, the astrophotographer continued sharing updates about the feline, including how he started adjusting at home.
A few days later, McCarthy shared in one of the updates that he named the cat Gregory. He also noted, “Haven’t seen his sad eyes since the shelter.” The photographer wrote that the feline and the dog, Bailey, “have beef from time to time but otherwise they seem to be fine.” He added the two pets sleep near each other without any issues.
In a recent update, McCarthy shared Gregory is now thriving — “He’s a happy dude that runs around my house like a lunatic.” The photographer said that Gregory likes to climb on his face as he sleeps and “meows at the birds and lizards through the window.” McCarthy continued to gush over the furbaby, further writing, “He’s such a good buddy even if he does steal my computer chair when I’m trying to work.”
