Seattle Area Feline Rescue Expands, Increases Cat Intake

Each year, Seattle Area Feline Rescue helps around 2,000 cats find forever homes, including senior cats and cats with disabilities. The rescue will be able to save even more lives due to an impressive expansion made possible by both fundraising and community action.

No-kill shelter expands facility through fundraising, community donations

According to the National Kitten Coalition, approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Of these, 1.4 million cats are euthanized, often because of overcrowding or limited resources. No-kill shelters, like the Seattle Area Cat Rescue, work to combat these devastating statistics. The rescue hopes to find homes for the cats that enter its doors, while making intake and medical care possible for more cats in need.

Seattle Area Cat Rescue, an organization known for its dedication to the livelihoods of cats, intends to grow and relocate to a new location in Ballinger Village in Shoreline. Made possible through fundraising and community efforts, the expansion of the facility allows the shelter to continue taking in and providing medical care for many cats. The current Seattle Area Feline Rescue location is about five miles away.

By expanding, the shelter will be able to aid in the rescue and medical treatment of thousands of cats. Shelly Lawson, the organization’s community engagement director, said the new facility will be more than twice the size of the current one.

“It’s going to more than double our square footage,” Lawson told King 5. “It’s hugely important because right now the space really limits how we can help our community. With more space, when a partner shelter says, ‘we have too many cats, can you help us?’ we’re going to have the space to take in those cats right away.”

This can have a big impact on the community’s ability to save lives.

New features of Seattle-area cat rescue facility help with mission

The rescue’s website shares details of the new 6,400-square-foot facility, boasting a list of upgrades. The new features will help with the mission to save the lives of cats. Upgrades include:

  • A spacious medical area, including separate exam and treatment rooms
  • New ICU, ringworm, and x-ray rooms
  • Space and equipment to perform dental surgeries
  • Housing areas that meet kitties’ needs for space and enrichment
  • An additional adoptable cat area
  • Increased storage for foster and cat care supplies
  • Office spaces for efficient teamwork
  • More room to perform spay/neuter surgeries
