Can Cats Eat Goose? Is Goose Safe For Cats?

Can cats eat goose? You might have been wondering this if you’ve decided to switch things up from turkey and instead plan on cooking a whole goose for a holiday feast or to celebrate a special event. If humans can eat goose, is it also safe for cats to eat?

The short answer is yes, cats can safely eat goose; although, due to goose being a fattier meat, you’ll want to make sure you only feed it to your cat in moderation. There are also a couple of safety precautions you’ll need to consider.

As always, you must ask your vet before sharing any human foods with your cat. Here’s what you should know about feeding goose to cats.

How Is Goose Good For Cats?

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that most of their daily diet should consist of protein. Goose fulfills part of that requirement, being a good source of protein. However, because goose can also be fattier than other birds, it’s not the ideal lean protein for a feline.

Goose is also high in B vitamins and contains a lot more iron than chicken.

How Can I Safely Give Goose To My Cat?

Firstly, cook the goose as plainly as possible and avoid using any spices or herbs that could be toxic to your cat. Garlic is also an ingredient to hold back on using if you’re planning to feed some goose meat to your cat because it’s toxic for felines to consume.

Secondly, render as much fat as possible out of the goose while you’re roasting it. This is because a high-fat diet is not suitable for cats.

When you serve goose to your cat, make sure to only feed them the goose meat and never the skin. This is to avoid adding too much fat to your feline’s diet. Also, it’s best to shred the goose meat from the bird’s bones so that you avoid any potential choking hazards.

Additionally, stick to serving lean pieces of goose to your cat as an occasional treat, rather than on a regular basis, on account of the higher levels of fat in the bird.

In all cases of feeding human foods to cats, be wary of feeding your cat too much in case they begin to develop a preference for it over their usual daily diet.
