Shelter receives Petties $10,000 donation

Everyone knows that the Petties Awards are considered the Oscars of the pet blogging community, but this year’s nominations ballot included an opportunity for the community to also vote for a non-profit animal shelter or rescue to receive a $10,000 donation. The lucky organization?

Drumroll please…

The winner of the 2012 pre-Petties $10,000 donation is the Humane Society of Chittenden County (HSCC) in South Burlington, Vermont!

HSCC takes in up to 1,000 needy animals each year, and serves as one of the region’s primary shelters. In addition to providing medical care and adoption services, HSCC is committed to education and community engagement. Programs include Camp Paw Paw — for animals lovers under 12 years of age — and free classes for individuals who want to learn more about the health and happiness of their dog.

HSCC, which is privately owned and receives no government funding, depends on donations like these to ensure its continued operation. Megan Stearns, Director of Development and Outreach at HSCC, was thrilled to learn the shelter had won this year’s award.

“Ten thousand dollars will aid our humane education programs, dog training classes, cruelty investigation efforts, and feral cat trap-neuter-return initiative,” she said. “And it will ensure that hundreds more homeless animals likewise find their fame and fortune in new homes this year. Now that’s something to brag about! Thank you, DogTime Media.”

Congratulations, HSCC!
