Grumpy Cat, The Internet’s Favorite Meme Kitty, Passes Away At Age 7

If you’ve spent any time looking at cat memes on the internet–and let’s be honest, you have–then you’re probably very familiar with Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce.

With a face that launched a thousand memes–actually several thousand–our favorite internet kitty made so many of us smile and laugh when we needed it most. Sadly, Grumpy Cat has passed away.

We will miss her very much at CatTime and in the pet lover community. It’s always heartbreaking to lose a cat we love, and many of us felt that Tardar Sauce was a part of our lives, almost like she was a member of our family.

So with heavy hearts, we wish Grumpy Cat well on the journey to the rainbow bridge. We will keep sharing her memes and her spirit of making others happy, even when we’re feeling grumpy.

Fans And Family Remember Grumpy Cat

Tardar Sauce’s owners informed the millions of fans who follow Grumpy Cat’s official social media pages that their beloved cat died at age seven.

Despite having great veterinary care and lots of love, the cat suffered from complications due to a urinary tract infection. She passed away on Tuesday, May 14th, 2019.

Fans and friends showed their support and shared their grief on social media after hearing the news. Notably, the official Twitter pages for Sesame Street, Nickelodeon, and Reddit, among many others, took time to pay tribute to the famous cat’s memory.

From A Reddit Post To International Fame

Grumpy Cat’s journey to fame began six years ago when her owner posted a photo on Reddit. It was simply captioned, “Meet grumpy cat.” The kitty’s looks were the result of feline dwarfism, and even though the condition left her looking permanently grumpy, her owners often said she was a happy cat who lived a good life.

Shortly after that first Reddit post, fans made memes with funny captions featuring the cat’s adorably grumpy looks. Grumpy Cat’s viral fame skyrocketed, and in 2013, she won a Webby Award for Meme Of The Year.

After that, Tardar Sauce appeared in commercials, on magazine covers, at major entertainment events, and more. Her owners started a business with a merchandise store, a New York Times best-selling book, and a Lifetime Christmas movie, among several other endeavors. She met celebrities, YouTube stars, and so many people throughout her life.

In her all-too-short seven years of life, Tardar Sauce lived more than most of us could hope to in our own lifetimes. She made so many people happy, and her memory will continue to do so.

Rest in peace, Grumpy Cat. We will miss you.
